• Measles Hysteria

The huge amount of hype around measles and the measles vaccine is creating hysteria.

It’s in the newspapers, radio and television.  The count is increasing day by day. Now it’s up to 90 cases in California, mainly centered around an outbreak at Disneyland.  It makes for great news.  Children are being kept out of school.  Health care workers may not be allowed at work.

Do you wonder why this news is being kept front and center?  Certainly the vaccine manufacturers promote vaccines of all types. This year the flu vaccine was promoted as usual.  Phone messages at pharmacies encourage you to get a flu shot before you can even speak with the pharmacy staff about a prescription. Turns out the flu vaccine had very little effectiveness this year.

If you want a health issue to really get concerned about, look at foodborne illness. A recent article in the New Yorker states that contaminated food sickens 48 million Americans every year. 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die. These aren’t illnesses from your last backyard barbeque. They are illnesses that are part of the way our food is produced and food manufacturers don’t want you to know.

Salmonella is a bacteria that contaminates over 90% of the chicken in the US.  When I prepare chicken at home, I treat my kitchen as a hazmat area. I open a plastic garbage bag and lay it over the counter and sink. I make sure that the raw chicken and juices never touch my counter or sink. After preparing the chicken on my hazmat surface, I lift the entire plastic and dispose of it, then clean the surfaces with bleach. I then use a meat thermometer to be sure the chicken has reached a temperature that is sure to kill the bacteria—165 degrees Fahrenheit.

Does food preparation need to be so hazardous? Denmark has lowered the salmonella rates to less than 2% following an outbreak in the 1980s. They did it by careful monitoring of farms, meticulous hygiene measures and recalls of tainted products. Unfortunately, in the US, the food lobby is so strong, that legislation can’t be passed to properly monitor and ensure our food safety.

To find out the real story, you have to follow the money–vaccine manufacturers that want to ensure their profits and a food lobby that protects food manufacturers. Tainted food–this is where the hysteria over illness should happen, in my opinion.
