• Are Cosmetics Making You Sick?

    on Jul 1st, 2014

Shampoo, soap, deodorant, hair conditioner, lip balm, sunscreen, body lotion, shaving products if you’re a man, and makeup if you are a woman.  These are things you use every day.  Do you think about what you are putting on your skin?

Personal care products contain 10,500 different chemicals, some of which cause cancer, infertility, and developmental problems in children.

The average woman uses 12 products containing 168 different ingredients daily. Many cosmetic chemicals are designed to penetrate into the skin’s inner layers, and they do. Consequently, some common cosmetic ingredients turn up in people’s bodies. Among them: industrial plasticizers called phthalates and parabens, which are preservatives. Many lipsticks, as an example, contain toxic metals including lead and cadmium.

What can you do?

Carefully examine the ingredients of any product before you buy it. Or try some homemade skin care recipes like these:

Rosewater Toner

1 dense cup of rose petals
2 cups of warm spring water

Pour the water over the rose petals and let steep for 30 minutes in a heat resistant bowl.  Then pour the rosewater through a cheesecloth or kitchen strainer into a sterilized jar. Your rosewater will keep approximately 7 to 10 days in your refrigerator.

Avocado and Olive Oil Facial Mask

1 half ripe avocado
Olive Oil

Scoop out the flesh of the avocado and mash to form a smooth paste with the olive oil. Apply to face and leave on 10 to 15 minutes. Soften with warm water and wipe clean. Pat face dry and follow with your choice of toner and moisturizer.

We recommend buying organic products for use in these recipes.
