Thyroid Q & A

Sklar Center for Restorative Medicine

What are thyroid disorders?

Thyroid disorders are the result of a malfunction of the thyroid, the butterfly-shaped gland at the base of your neck. Having too much or too little thyroid hormone affects different functions in the body, including:

  • Body temperature
  • Metabolism
  • Heart rate
  • Menstrual cycle
  • Weight

Your diagnosis depends on whether your thyroid makes too much or too little hormone. The two thyroid diseases are:

  • Graves’ disease: thyroid produces too much hormone
  • Hashimoto’s disease: thyroid doesn’t make enough hormone

What are the symptoms of a thyroid problem?

The symptoms of thyroid disorders vary depending on your hormone levels, but the following are the most common symptoms:

  • Fatigue
  • Weight gain
  • Sensitive to cold
  • Dry hair and skin
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Constipation
  • Menstrual cycle irregularities
  • Mood swings, anxiety, depression

Additional commonly overlooked symptoms of thyroid dysfunction that the Sklar Center screens for are:

  • Fine bumps on the back of your arms
  • Hair loss on the outer eyebrows
  • Puffy face and eyes
  • Concentration problems
  • Basal body temperature below 97.8°F most days

Our team provides thorough exams and blood panels to look for indicators of thyroid dysfunction. We also examine your thyroid hormone and nutrient levels closer than traditional methods do. Your hormone levels may be within what most doctors consider the “normal” range, even if they’re outside the parameters for optimal functionality.

What treatment options do you offer for thyroid disorders?

After taking a full thyroid panel and checking for nutrient and iodine deficiencies, the Sklar Center Team creates a treatment plan. We use thyroid replacement therapy and supplements to restore levels of nutrients that are essential for thyroid function.

Since dietary gluten commonly causes Hashimoto’s, we can test for gluten sensitivity and, based on your results, provide nutritional guidance to get your symptoms under control. We can also help you with environmental treatments, so you can eliminate the toxins that disrupt your hormone function from your living areas.

The Sklar Center Team can also provide stress reduction guidance since stress interferes with thyroid activity. Too much cortisol in your system can block thyroid hormone production, eventually leading to thyroid damage.

If you have or suspect you have a thyroid condition, get in touch with the Sklar Center online or by phone to discuss your restorative treatment options.
