Many of us spend hours trying to navigate the plethora of medical products and “expert” advice bombarding us every day. We may end up confused and uncertain. I recommend asking yourself this simple question, “What is Health and What is Disease?”
Our ideas of health have been shaped by a medical system that believes health can be achieved by using pharmaceutical drugs. We have come to expect a prescription as treatment when we go to see a doctor. We may feel shortchanged if we are not handed a piece of paper to take to the pharmacy. But, shouldn’t a trip to the doctor provide more than a piece of paper…
Increasingly, the American public is dissatisfied with this herding of patients through medical offices with little time to interact with our doctors. People are looking for other solutions. They are no longer comfortable with the promises of pharmaceutical companies and the reassurances of their doctors that the drugs being pushed are safe and effective. And they are right.

Conventional medicine doesn’t believe there is any intervention that can slow the aging process. They stand by helplessly as they see patients declining. At the Sklar Center, we typically see people who have looked for solutions to problems like fatigue, depression and weight without success. They’ve been told there isn’t anything that can be done, or the only treatment offered is more medicine. A 2011 review study states that elderly patients in a geriatric care clinic were taking an average of 15 medications per day! The number of adverse drug reactions averaged 9 per person! Gerontologists, the medical doctors that specialize in care for the elderly, spend their time basically juggling medications. There is no other care for the elderly—not nutritional approaches, exercise, or stress reduction techniques.
A Cutting Edge Approach to Health
While modern medicine is lifesaving in an emergency, it often fails miserably in preventing and treating chronic diseases. These are problems like heart attacks, strokes, cancer, and Alzheimer’s. Chronic disease prevention requires an entirely different approach. A holistic approach—one that looks at the whole person, as well as their environment, relationships and stresses. An approach that looks for the real causes of diseases so that they can be prevented or slowed down, not covered up with a band aid.
Where do you find the solutions? We find it in Restorative Medicine. It is a new way of being healthy. It is a scientifically based field of medicine which uses cutting edge technology as well as ancient wisdom to restore your body to optimum health by diagnosing and treating the causes of your problems.
Treating You as a Whole Person
Restorative Medicine looks at the whole person, rather than dividing the body into separate systems. Traditional medical practice divides you into mind and body. Then your body is divided into cardiac, nervous, skin, endocrine, reproductive, and gastrointestinal systems. All of these systems including your mind are intimately connected.
Restorative Medicine also looks at the effects of our environment on our health. Many toxins surround us and cause hormone imbalances, respiratory illnesses and other chronic diseases. Stress upsets our hormonal and biochemical balance, which increases our risk of chronic diseases. Stress may be due to physical or emotional demands. Regardless, the mind and body approaches of Restorative Medicine help to reduce the effects of stress on our health.
And what about the conventional medical approach to aging? It isn’t an approach. It’s “oh well, stuff happens, and we can’t do anything about it.” Yet, there is so much scientific knowledge about the causes of aging and decline. This knowledge allows us the develop treatments and preventive care. Restoring balance and preventing disease requires going deep under the surface to look for the root causes. Sophisticated testing allows us to do this. When the causes are found, treatment is individualized. Natural approaches are used which combine lifestyle changes, nutritional supplements and hormones. These are the basics for slowing down the aging process and achieving health longevity.
By taking an integrated view Restorative Medicine is better able to diagnose and treat many seemingly untreatable problems.
