What If Stress is Killing Your Sexy?

Dear Susan,

Your thyroid, that small, butterfly shaped gland at the front of your neck, is key to feeling vibrant, energetic, and having great hair and nails.

If you think that you have low thyroid function because of symptoms like weight gain, fatigue, dry skin, dry hair, hair loss, brittle nails, constipation, and cold hands and feet, guess what? YOU’RE RIGHT!

Even if you’ve gone to the doctor and had testing, you might have been told that “everything looks normal.” Even without lab tests you can do something to help your thyroid work better right now.

It turns out that stress—as in driving the busy freeway, dealing with bratty teenagers, or caring for aging parents—can actually interfere with important steps in the manufacture of your most important thyroid hormone, T3 (also known as triiodothyronine, but that’s a mouthful). Stress will also cause you to make an interfering hormone called Reverse T3 which blocks the action of your very important T3. So, fatigue, weight gain, hair loss can happen—and these will certainly kill your sexy. You can do something about this right now. Slow down, relax, take time each day to meditate and stop the killing effects of stress on your health.
