What is one of the cheapest and easiest medical interventions that would save the most lives? Knowing this number could literally save your life. That number is your Vitamin D level. Every single cell in your body is directed by Vitamin D. And what’s more, it is not even a vitamin. It is actually a type of steroid hormone that targets over 1,000 genes! It is the most potent steroid hormone in the body. An estimated 600,000 cases of cancer could be prevented EACH year if Vitamin D levels were optimized.
If you don’t know your number, ask for it from your doctor. Those of us in the forefront of preventive health care are focusing on these numbers more and more.
YOUR VITAMIN D NUMBER:
Optimal Vitamin D=60-80 ng/ml
Low Vitamin D=30-60 ng/ml
Severe Deficiency=Less than 30 ng/ml
PREVENTION OF DISEASE:
75 % of all cancer can be prevented by having a vitamin D level at 55 ng/ml.
Partial list of problems that can be prevented with adequate vitamin D levels:
Breast, Endometrial and Ovarian Cancer
Colon Cancer, pancreatic cancer, lymphoma and leukemia
Falls and Fractures
Heart disease, stroke, hypertension
Colds and flu by boosting the infection killing cells in your body
WHO IS AT RISK?
Low Vitamin D is an epidemic in the United States and worldwide. Groups that are at special risk are:
Dark Skinned People
People with High body fat
People who live at high latitudes where there is less sunlight
HOW MUCH IS ENOUGH?
You need enough Vitamin D to raise your blood level to the optimal amount, 60-80 ng/ml
If you are getting your Vitamin D from a supplement, which most of us need to do, you will want one that contains specifically Vitamin D3. The dosage is the amount it takes to get your Vitamin D level to goal. If your Vitamin D level is very low, you may need as much as 10,000 iu (international units) per day for a few months to get it to the optimal level. After that, you may only need 5,000 every day or every other day. If you cannot get tested for Vitamin D blood levels, I recommend taking 2,000-5,000 iu per day so that you don’t exceed the 100 ng/ml upper limit of normal. Decrease your dosage in sunny weather when you get more sun exposure and Vitamin D conversion.
Natural Sources of Vitamin D: There are relatively few natural sources. Herring, salmon, mackerel, sardines, eel, cod liver oil contain some Vitamin D. There is very little in eggs and vitamin D fortified milk.
At the Sklar Center, we include Vitamin D optimization in all of our programs. It is essential to good immunity, fat loss, muscle building, healthy moods and prevention of serious, chronic disease.
