We are 34th in the world in infant mortality after Cuba, Croatia and the Czech Republic.
Yet we spend triple the amount of money per person on health care than Slovenia and the Czech Republic.
What is wrong with this picture?
Drugs are not buying us health. Surgery is not buying us health. The latest gadgets are not buying us health. ObamaCare will not buy you health. These are rescue medicine—an attempt to help you when you are already broken. They cannot make you truly well. They have a vested interest in keeping you sick because it generates profits. ObamaCare offers up millions of Americans to the health insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies. Yes, there will be coverage for people who previously could not buy it. But make no mistake, this will not make us a healthy society.
Americans have a misguided notion that the health care system will take care of them and make them well. This has been promoted through Madison Avenue marketing. This, however, is not true. You are the one who makes you truly well.
20% of your health is determined by genetics. 80% of your health is determined by what you do!
That’s great news. You have the potential to live long and healthy regardless of your genetics. But—you must get involved in activating your longevity genes.
How to do this? Here’s a plan for getting started.
Step #1: Start moving. A tremendous body of scientific work shows that exercise, both resistance and aerobic, turns on your longevity genes and turns back the clock on aging. Exercise reduces inflammation which is the underlying cause of all chronic disease—cardiovascular, Alzheimer’s and cancer. That’s right. There is less breast cancer in women who exercise.
Step #2: Reduce and eventually eliminate refined carbs from your diet. That means bread, pasta, cookies, cake, candy, pretzels, corn chips, rice cakes and potato chips. Next, greatly reduce the amounts of any carbs, even beans, yams, quinoa, and winter squash. Blood sugar regularity is key to avoiding diabetes, Alzheimer’s and cardiovascular disease. As a matter of fact, diabetes doubles your risk for Alzheimer’s disease. Even pre-diabetic blood sugar levels increase your risk of mild cognitive impairment (loss of memory and ability to think normally).
Step #3: Decrease body fat. Inflammation is the underlying cause of all chronic disease. Lots of inflammatory chemicals are made in body fat. The medical profession previously thought that fat was an inert mass of tissue that just sat there. We now know that body fat is a veritable chemical factory. It makes chemicals that travel around your body and do damage—to your blood vessels, leading to cardiovascular disease and to your brain, leading to Alzheimers.
How do we increase life expectancy and lower infant mortality? How do we achieve healthy longevity? The solution is not in a drug, an insurance policy or surgery. It is up to you!
