We got rid of the infections that killed children and infants and shortened our lives before 1900. The modern era has been marked by longer life spans, but although we live longer, we do not live better.
The killer infections have been replaced by our killer lifestyle. Now that modern medicine and sanitation have rid us of infections that killed large numbers of people and shortened our life spans, we are killing ourselves through what we eat.
The worst thing to happen to our diet has been the development of grains and the foods made from them. What do I mean? I mean foods made with flour and sugar. It can be wheat based, or corn or rice. It can be any of the less well known grains like spelt, rye, or oats. This includes bread, candy, cakes, pretzels, tortillas, even gluten free products. This includes any grain product that turns to sugar quickly.
It’s not our fault. We are genetically programmed to like sugar. Our bodies know that sugar is the fastest form of energy. Eating sugar is a genetically programmed addiction. The addiction centers in the brain (the same ones stimulated by cocaine) light up on scans when we eat sugar.
Fast food and industrial food companies know this fact very well. They use sugar to keep us hooked. Eating sugar creates the craving for more sugar. So it is self perpetuating.
