Recent news stories have led some people to question if using a compounding pharmacy is safe or not. It is important to know that your compounding pharmacy is perfectly safe. Dr. Sklar recently paid a visit to the compounding pharmacy she uses, Pharmco Pharmacy. Pharmco is owned and operated by Robert P. Nickell who has been a trusted colleague of Dr. Sklar for more than 20 years. This pharmacy is run and staffed by qualified professionals dedicated to safety and customer care. The environment is pristine and exceeds the standards of the California Board of Pharmacy. Each batch of prescriptions is thoroughly tested for potency and sterility.
So what is a compounding pharmacy, and what might it be used for?
A compounding pharmacy is one that buys ingredients and combines them into medication on the premises. In days gone by this was the only way patients received their medicines. There was a trusted relationship between the doctor, patient and pharmacist that allowed for specific and customized medications. Now, most medicines are mass produced by pharmaceutical companies and delivered pre-packaged in common doses and flavors.
So why do many physicians still refer their patients to compounding pharmacies? These pharmacies can create medications specific to the patient. In Restorative Medicine, the bioidentical hormones that are such an important part of treatment need to be made in specific doses for each patient. In addition, some formulations are not available from the pharmaceutical companies. A patient may need a medicine or supplement that is available commercially but that they cannot take due to an allergy to a dye or other chemical used in the making of the mass produced item.
Dr. Sklar says, “I know Robert is running a top-notch pharmacy and that my patients are safe with his formulations.”
